Akwaaba!
Sigma Mu Sigma (Ghana Sigmas) Chapter would like to thank our Sorors of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. and our Brothers of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. for the outpouring of support. It has been a dream of ours to start a chapter in Ghana, the home of Honorable Bro. Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. The members of this newly chartered chapter have been Sigmas in various chapters for decades and about half of us reside on the continent. Others travel back and forth regularly. Please continue to follow us and reach out to keep abreast of all the exciting things we will have coming up. We apologize, but for the time being we have halted our SMS eMarketplace so that we can make some necessary changes. Beyond that, if you'd like to visit Ghana, check out our travel page.

CHARTERED
February 29, 2020
Chartering Week took place Feb. 26 - March 1 in 2020. It was a week of brotherhood, scholarship and service. Tours of Parliament and Cape Coast Castle, ceremonial opening of our first borehole, and ending with our chartering ceremony.
International History
Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity was founded at Howard University in Washington, D.C., January 9, 1914, by three young African-American male students. The Founders, Honorable A. Langston Taylor, Honorable Leonard F. Morse, and Honorable Charles I. Brown, wanted to organize a Greek letter fraternity that would truly exemplify the ideals of brotherhood, scholarship, and service.
The Founders deeply wished to create an organization that viewed itself as "a part of" the general community rather than "apart from" the general community. They believed that each potential member should be judged by his own merits, rather than his family background or affluence...without regard to race, nationality, skin tone or texture of hair. They desired for their fraternity to exist as part of an even greater brotherhood which would be devoted to the "inclusive we" rather than the "exclusive we."
From its inception, the Founders also conceived Phi Beta Sigma as a mechanism to deliver services to the general community. Rather than gaining skills to be utilized exclusively for themselves and their immediate families, they held a deep conviction that they should return their newly acquired skills to the communities from which they had come. This deep conviction was mirrored in the Fraternity's motto, "Culture For Service and Service For Humanity."
Today, Phi Beta Sigma has blossomed into an international organization of leaders. No longer a single entity, members of the Fraternity have been instrumental in the establishment of the Phi Beta Sigma National Foundation, the Phi Beta Sigma Federal Credit Union and The Sigma Beta Club Foundation. Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, founded in 1920 with the assistance of Phi Beta Sigma, is the sister organization of the Fraternity.
Chapter History
The Sigma Mu Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. was chartered on February 29, 2020 in Accra, Ghana. The brothers of SMS were joined by an amazing array of friends, family and dignitaries to commemorate this historic event. Dozens of members made the trip from around the world to join us. The SMS brothers have been collaborating for several years leading up to this moment - but the real hard work now begins.
Consistent with the mission and vision of our founders, SMS will be working on a number of programs throughout Ghana. Because of the nature of the continent and West Africa as a whole, Accra will be the hub for activities throughout the country. We encourage members of our organization from around the world to assist us with our goals, and for others to join us on this journey.
