CHARTERED
February 29, 2020
Chartering Week took place Feb. 26 - March 1 in 2020. It was a week of brotherhood, scholarship and service. Tours of Parliament and Cape Coast Castle, ceremonial opening of our first borehole, and ending with our chartering ceremony.
In uncertain times there is nothing like having the support of a Brotherhood. As the rhythm of our lives are temporarily disrupted let us use this moment to reconnect with family, friends and our brothers. Take time to enjoy the world around you, whether it’s taking a walk in your neighborhood (if you are allowed) or taking some much-needed time to rest. COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) has disrupted just about every aspect of our lives. Our first priority as a “Brotherhood of Conscious Men Actively Serving our Communities” is your health and safety.
We hope you will not be misled by reports that COVID-19 is a hoax or has been exaggerated. We have friends, brothers and members of our families who have taken sick or passed away. This is real, and those that ignore precautions are often those that are passing on the virus.
As we navigate through COVID-19, we encourage members and friends to be aware of basic health guidance.
International History
Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity was founded at Howard University in Washington, D.C., January 9, 1914, by three young African-American male students. The Founders, Honorable A. Langston Taylor, Honorable Leonard F. Morse, and Honorable Charles I. Brown, wanted to organize a Greek letter fraternity that would truly exemplify the ideals of brotherhood, scholarship, and service.
The Founders deeply wished to create an organization that viewed itself as "a part of" the general community rather than "apart from" the general community. They believed that each potential member should be judged by his own merits, rather than his family background or affluence...without regard to race, nationality, skin tone or texture of hair. They desired for their fraternity to exist as part of an even greater brotherhood which would be devoted to the "inclusive we" rather than the "exclusive we."
From its inception, the Founders also conceived Phi Beta Sigma as a mechanism to deliver services to the general community. Rather than gaining skills to be utilized exclusively for themselves and their immediate families, they held a deep conviction that they should return their newly acquired skills to the communities from which they had come. This deep conviction was mirrored in the Fraternity's motto, "Culture For Service and Service For Humanity."
Today, Phi Beta Sigma has blossomed into an international organization of leaders. No longer a single entity, members of the Fraternity have been instrumental in the establishment of the Phi Beta Sigma National Foundation, the Phi Beta Sigma Federal Credit Union and The Sigma Beta Club Foundation. Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, founded in 1920 with the assistance of Phi Beta Sigma, is the sister organization of the Fraternity.
Chapter History
The Sigma Mu Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. was chartered on February 29, 2020 in Accra, Ghana. The brothers of SMS were joined by an amazing array of friends, family and dignitaries to commemorate this historic event. Dozens of members made the trip from around the world to join us. The SMS brothers have been collaborating for several years leading up to this moment - but the real hard work now begins.
Consistent with the mission and vision of our founders, SMS will be working on a number of programs throughout Ghana. Because of the nature of the continent and West Africa as a whole, Accra will be the hub for activities throughout the country. We encourage members of our organization from around the world to assist us with our goals, and for others to join us on this journey.
